Dioscorides's dophins and the Microbial Lab
A few days ago I posted a little ditty about Dioscorides' alleged dolphins in my Delphiniums: Searching for dolphins amongst rhinos. The commentary was supurb and very helpful - damn I'm impressed with the people "out there." And now, just a few days later, Pam from the Microbial Lab has actually found the dolphins and snapped a photo. Remarkable and beautiful... to say nothing of what I'm feeling about the fact that someone actually took something I wrote and carried into their garden with them. I'm delighted at the image. You MUST go read what she has to say about these dolphins. Click the picture, or The Elusive Dolphin (in the Delphiniums).

In this site: Delphinium History, they state: "Delphiniums received their name from the ancient Greeks who thought the shape of the flower bud with its spur, resembled that of a dolphin." - so I guess that is what they saw. It's funny though, I've had larkspur reseeding in my yard for years now, and I never made the connection. But then, I wasn't looking.

My fellow submariner. We earned them, but I don't remember reading this in the piping tabs. From now on I'll look upon these in a slightly different light.

Mystery solved....looks more like a short-tailed blue whale to me. I like your blog renovation too, BTW.
