I'm on the hunt for an interesting Hydrangea anomala (Climbing Hydrangea) as well as:
- Hydrangea arborescens subsp. radiata 'Samantha'
- Hydrangea aborescens subsp. radiata
- Hydrangea aspera (although this will have to be hothoused in my climate)
- Hydrangea kawakamii (although I need to more properly fix it's hardiness level)
- Hydrangea serrata 'Beni Gaku'
*These are "regularly" listed as macrophylla though I believe they are "more properly" serrata... if there can be a "more proper" anything with regard to the macrophylla | serrata mess that is Hydrangea nomenclature today.
+ These species / culivars are listed in the grouping that is the common ("on the tag") nomenclature... although they are clearly some sort of hybrid/ cross/ anomoly... 'Endless Summer' blooms on new wood (this is NOT a macrophylla trait) and 'Bulk' (QuickFire) has such surprisingly sanguine stems that one must suspect the paniculata assignation.
# Grown primarily for foliage.
!! This is an unsual species. It changes form throughout the year. (Phase 1, & 3 Blooms). Very strange. In containers.

I'm SO glad you're back. I panicked a few days ago when it looked as if your blog was 'finished' - as it's the first one I check every morning.
The hydrangea photo is absolutely gorgeous. Here in my coastal CA garden the hydrangeas peaked in mid June - now are fading to a dry and papery buff color.

I'm crazy about hydrangeas as well. Got a new one this year , Hydrangea Serrata 'Spreading Beauty ' which was developed in Belgium from a cutting taken in Korea. Korea's climate is very similar to Chicago and most of their plants are hardy here.
My favorite Hydrangea thus far is Hydrangea Paniculata 'Limelight. ' It has been blooming in my garden since June.
